Ceraset polysilazane high-temperature coating
High-temperature coating use of polysilazane resins in cited CMC papers.
From the archived site record
This allows them to be used in composite applications where high thermal and corrosion resistance are required.
Structural components made from KDT polysilazanes are a light weight substitution for more conventional materials.
CMCs made from KDT polysilazanes have the advantage of being lighter and less dense with the ability to operate at higher temperatures than metal alloys.
In aircraft engines the lighter weight of CMC components made from KDT's polysilazanes compared to metallic components can reduce fuel consumption allowing for longer range and increased payload.
Figures the reports actually state
To protect the SiC/SiC composites from surface recession, environmental barrier coatings (EBC) have been developed.
One key example is a multilayered coating having a barium strontium aluminum silicate (BSAS) and rare earth silicate top coat [5, 6].
The BSAS and rare earth silicate based EBCs have upper temperature capabilities of ~13160C [6] and ~14820C [7], respectively for applications over 30,000 hours.
In general, an EBC consists of two or more layers that each layer has its own functionality and characteristics.
The layer on top of the substrate is referred to as bond coat is typically silicon, followed by an intermediate coat which is a mixture of Mullite and top coat, and then a top coat.
d from the panel with dimensions (length by width) of 76.2 mm by 76.2 mm.
The bulk density of the CMC was determined to be 2.58 ± 0.06 g/cm3.
The EBC system was deposited onto the CMC coupons via air plasma spray (APS).
The deposition was performed after the CMC coupons were cut to size (76.2 mm by 76.2 mm) and grit blasted with cubic boron nitride.
A Si bond coat was deposited to a nominal thickness of 127 µm followed by a nominally 254 µm thick ytterbium disilicate (Yb2Si2O7) topcoat.
The total thickness of each coupon (EBC + CMC) was approximately 3.43 mm.
Each sample was tested in the as-deposited condition with no post-deposition heat treatment or annealing step performed.
